"Retayne" - used to fix the dyes in commercially purchased cotton fabrics or clothing. Someone told us she uses it when washing blue jeans as she does not like the faded look. Good for washing your fabrics before making quilts. ***********************************************
Sometimes you may want to tackle something without first reading how it's done. Who knows - you may develop a new technique doing this!! However, make sure that you have enough fabric to spare in case "it doesn't work!!!" ********************************************** When sewing blocks on point - here is how to figure size to cut side setting triangles. The magic number is 1.4142. Multiply the size of the finished block by 1.4142. (The finished block is the size of the blocks in the quilt). Then add 1-1/4" for seam allowances. Cut it corner to corner twice to make four side triangles. The grain will be along the edge of the quilt. For corner square blocks: divide the block size by 1.4142 and add 7/8". Cut the block in half diagonally. Again, the grain will be along the edge of the quilt.
So - say your blocks are 6" finished. 6" X 1.4142 = 8-1/2" + 1-1/4" = 9-3/4" for side setting triangles.
6" divided by 1.4142 = 4-1/4" + 7/8" = 5-1/8" for corner square triangles. ****************************************
Need some extra time during the day? Use a timer. If you have 5 minutes to spare before you have to leave the house, set the timer. Then you can sew without spending that 5 minutes looking at the clock. You'll be amazed at how much you can get accomplished in 5 minutes. There are small timers that you can purchase at the hardware stores that clip on to your clothes.
